, Rohan K., Mumbai (Product: Jharokha Wall Frame)
I was buying for my mother’s birthday. She had recently moved to a smaller flat and was trying to make it feel like home, she’d specifically said she wanted something Rajasthani for the wall.
The Jharokha felt right, she grew up in Rajasthan and knows exactly what a jharokha is. But what actually moved her was the card inside the box.
Premloom includes a handwritten card that describes the piece, what craft tradition it comes from, that it’s made by a wood-carving artisan in Rajasthan, a brief note about why the Jharokha is significant in Rajasthani architecture. My mother read it aloud to me on the phone.
She said: “This is not just a decorative piece. Someone made it. Someone wrote a note about it. That means something.”
It’s now hung on the east wall of her living room, exactly where she wanted it. She tells everyone who visits where it came from and why.
