Craft & Material

Kadamb Wood Hand-Carving

Material: Seasoned Kadamb Wood

Technique: Hand-carved, lac-turned & hand-painted in Rajasthan

The Craft Story

Kadamb is the traditional wood of Rajasthani figurine carvers. Light, fine-grained, and receptive to the lac-turning technique. Each piece is carved from a single block, shaped on a manual lathe, then painted by hand using natural pigments mixed on-site.

Description

Blue shows every hesitation in the brush, which makes it an unforgiving colour to paint by hand.

This elephant is carved in wood and painted by hand in deep blue, with red and gold folk detailing across the head and back and a run of fine white dots down each leg. In the folk vocabulary of Rajasthan the elephant carries wisdom and strength, the steady kind rather than the loud kind.

It works on a desk, a console table or a shelf where it can be seen from more than one side, and it makes a considered gift for someone marking a beginning.

Wipe with a dry or lightly damp cloth. Keep out of direct sun so the colours stay true.

Kadamb Wood Hand-Carving

Handcrafted in Rajasthan, Rajasthan

Material

Kadamb wood (Neolamarckia cadamba), natural lacquer

The craft: Kadamb wood is soft enough to carve in fine detail but durable enough to last generations. Artisans begin with a rough block, sketch the form in chalk, then work through progressively finer chisels over several hours โ€” sometimes days for complex pieces. The lacquer finish is applied by hand in multiple coats.

The People Behind It

Our core Kadamb wood carving families are based in the old city of Rajasthan, where this craft has been practised for over 500 years. Premloom works directly with 12+ artisan families โ€” no middlemen โ€” ensuring fair wages and complete creative freedom for the craftspeople behind every piece.
